TECH TIP: Battery Care
To ensure long battery life and trouble free operation of your motorcycle we recommend routine rider battery inspection and maintenance. Most batteries are located under the seat and are easily accessible for inspection.
Ensure both cables are clean and secure, Corrosion and loose fasteners are with out a doubt the most common cause of intermittent electrical problems. Battery cable connections can be cleaned with common household cleaning products, a small wire bristle brush or abrasive pad such as Scotch Brite Pads or Steel Wool will do fine.
To remove or tighten battery screws a small 10mm wrench or a #2 Phillips Screw driver can be used
Use care when tightening to avoid arcing.
Prior to storage ensure you motorcycle battery is fully charged, disconnect the negative battery cable or remove the Maxi fuse to prevent parasitic loads (Radio, ECM, cruise control) from draining battery during prolonged storage.
Most late model Harley Davidson motorcycle especially V-Rod and Touring models have a small 2-3 milliamp draw to provide power to electronic engine management and security systems.
We strongly encourage our customers to purchase and use a battery tender to ensure a fully charged battery and long battery life.
If despite use of a battery tender and good battery care and maintenance battery failure recurs other charging system components may be the cause. Voltage regulator failure are seen occasionally as well as stators.
